Shake Up for Summer

CUWBC President, Larkin Sayre and members of CULRC were delighted to join Public Health England and Disney UK to inspire kids in Cambridge to get moving with new Change4Life Disney themed activities.

Larkin spoke about the morning,

“It was so much fun working with the kids at Arbury Primary School doing some 10 minute Shake Up Games and getting them interested in staying active. Was not a difficult job! They were incredibly energetic and receptive to the games. I love taking part in this kind of event and hopefully spreading some of the amazing things sport has done for me to others. When I am active and feeling good I am able to achieve more in every other aspect of my life. It boosts my confidence and my mood and I know I will be an athlete (in some capacity) all my life!”

At CUWBC & CULRC we recognise the importance of physical health not just for competition but for life! We were delighted to help inspire kids to keep active over the summer break as we know this will put them in good shape for next academic year.  The 10 minute shake up is a great way for children to get moving and to feel great too!  Larkin and team mates had a great morning at Arbury Primary School at the launch of the Change4Life 10 minute Shake Up.

Some key figures

  • Only 20% of boys and 14% of girls in England meet national physical activity recommendations to do at least 60 minutes every day.
  • Less than half of parents in the East of England are aware that physical activity can build children’s self-confidence, reduce anxiety and improve their self-esteem

Evidence shows that children and young people who are more active have more confidence, higher self-esteem, less anxiety and stress and better social skills – attributes that can help them deal with the challenges they face in daily life.  Positive attitudes towards physical activity have also been associated with children being happier

Our team knows, first hand, how sport has had a positive impact on their lives, both on and off the water.  Members of the team were delighted to meet children from Arbury Primary School to show them how to enjoy the Disney inspired activities!  The Light Blue team was made up of Maddy Taylor, Becca Clarke, Sam Banner, Zelna Weich, Rosanna Barraclough and Clare Gayer  who all enjoyed the session.  It was not Which Blue are you but….. Which @Disney character are you?

Simon How, Health and Wellbeing Programme Lead at PHE East of England, said:

“ Our Change4Life 10 minute shake-up games aim to help fire up the imagination of young Disney fans by offering a series of activities for kids to enjoy. The children will develop and practice the skills they need to build strength like – Mr Incredible, Stamina Like – Buzz Lightyear and Agility like – Simba.  The games are available for schools to use and for pupils to take home and have fun with family and friends all through the summer holidays.”

We were delighted to support the 10 Minute Shake-Up campaign as were are really keen to encourage kids to try new activities and have fun, and show how physical activity can help develop the skills you need to face life’s challenges.
