04 Sep Cambridge University Rowing Women & Lightweights Begin 2019 Season
Training for the 2019 Boat Races began for Cambridge University Women and Lightweights on Saturday 1st September. The programme which has over 70 students sees openweight women, lightweight women and lightweight men all training together under the “Cambridge University Rowing” banner.
The Squad includes a mix of returning rowers from last year’s winning Boat Race crews, new rowers from programs around the world, and rowers who have learned to row with their College Boat Clubs in Cambridge and been part of our Development Squads.
The 2018/19 Season sees changes to the Coaching Team for Cambridge University Rowing. Patrick Ryan has stepped up strongly into the role of Interim Chief Coach and led the largest ever cohort of CUWBC crews rowing through the summer including a bronze medal in the Women’s Quad at the European Universities Games in Portugal.
We are delighted to welcome Astrid Cohnen as our new Assistant Coach. Astrid has been coaching male and female student athletes, lightweight and open-weight to U23 World Championships level in the Netherlands for many years and will be a great addition to the Team.
CUWBC President for 2018/19, Abigail Parker said;
“It has been great to assemble our squad and welcome newcomers! I’m enjoying getting to know new teammates and our new coach, Astrid. It’s fun to be training with a big group again and to begin feeding off each other and pushing each other to improve. The next few weeks before term starts are a great chance to focus on training and build our team atmosphere leading into the season ahead.”
